Gameplay video of Subtension
Subtension was a submarine simulation roguelike-like case study of Subset Game's FTL: Faster Than Light. It is a two-semester-long project prototyped by the Summer team at WolverineSoft Studio and finished by the Fall team. A total of 40 students worked on this game.
As a member of the art department at WolverineSoft Studio, I was in charge of the background concept art and character animations for this game. I also volunteered in the narrative team with another student to create a multi-ending story of an apocalyptic world where people can only live underwater with the shelter of either a city or submarines. All storylines and narratives in this game were also voiced. While I enjoyed creating concept art for subvention, I also found the narrative design process inspiring for this project. It was the longest in-game story I helped design, which contains 6-7 choices for the player to make that might affect the story's outcome. As we were conducting narrative design, we also used the help of AI image tools to show other artists the feeling and atmosphere we were seeking in their art, creating a fast and effective starting point for artists to develop from.
